The Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI) has backed President Prabowo Subianto's call to revise regulations that still allow loopholes for land burning, in order to strengthen forest and land fire prevention. APHI chairman Soewarso said in a Jakarta statement that fire respects neither ownership boundaries nor administrative limits. He argued that the rule permitting burning of up to two hectares cannot guarantee fires stay under control, and should prompt a review of fire prevention policies on the ground. Prabowo raised the issue on September 24 during a discussion at Merdeka Palace with academics and researchers from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on handling forest and land fires, particularly on peatlands. APHI said regulatory reform must be paired with stronger supervision, law enforcement, support for no-burn land clearing, and clearer responsibilities for all parties, including forestry companies, with central and regional policies aligned.

More forest owners in Vietnam's Quang Tri province are changing how they manage their land, moving beyond planting trees simply to harvest timber. With support from the Improved Forest Management and Certification (IFMC) project run by WWF-Vietnam and funded by HP Corporation, some growers have taken training and joined an FSC-certified forest farmer group. Tran Dinh Viet, a farmer in Trieu Phong commune, said FSC-compliant management means not only selling wood but also preserving soil, water and the environment; better techniques bring higher timber quality, higher prices from buyers and more stable forestry income. His family's 3 hectares sold for about 30 million VND more than conventionally planted forest. Fellow commune resident Le Van Nam has also shifted from his old "faster growth, earlier sale" approach, changing production methods and intercropping native species among acacia. The responsible forest management model is gradually spreading, linking local livelihoods with environmental protection and a sustainable timber value chain.

A major forest fire broke out in the Las Moyas area of the Cerros Orientales, the eastern hills of Bogota, Colombia. The blaze started shortly after 1:00 p.m. and affected roughly 1,500 square meters. Residents filmed a thick column of smoke rising from the hills and alerted authorities, after which Bogota's fire department launched an operation. Resources deployed included 20 firefighters, an extinguishing machine, a water tanker, four rapid-response pickup trucks and a specialized drone team. By around 3:00 p.m. the smoke column had diminished while crews continued firefighting, with two squads remaining on site and drones flying over the area to check conditions. The fire was partially controlled near 8:00 p.m., and minutes later the fire department confirmed it had been fully extinguished after about seven hours of work. Authorities are now assessing the terrain to establish the cause of the fire and determine more precisely the condition of the affected area.

A study published in Archives of Microbiology examined how native Trichoderma spp. from remnant Araucaria angustifolia forests respond antagonistically to different isolates of Bipolaris sorokiniana. Spot blotch, caused by B. sorokiniana, is a major threat to global barley production. While Trichoderma fungi are widely recognized for their biocontrol potential, the extent to which genetic diversity among pathogen isolates affects antagonistic responses has been poorly understood. The research used methods including ISSR molecular markers to compare interactions between pathogen isolates and native Trichoderma strains. The findings indicate that biocontrol outcomes may vary with the genetic background of the pathogen, offering useful information for selecting and applying biocontrol agents in forestry and agriculture.

A study in Forest Science developed models to estimate merchantable biomass and carbon stocks of bottomland hardwood oaks in the Arkansas Delta. The authors note that bottomland hardwood forests in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) play a key role in regional carbon dynamics and ecosystem services, yet biomass estimation models for oak species in this distinctive ecosystem remain limited. The research applied both allometric and random forest models. The work can help improve the accuracy of carbon stock accounting and merchantable biomass assessment in the region, offering useful reference for forestry carbon measurement and forest management.

A study in Ecological Research assessed key predictors of restoration success in mining-degraded areas, focusing on proximity to forest fragments. The research is set against the 2015 Fundão tailings dam collapse in Mariana, Brazil, which buried large areas of Atlantic Forest under mining waste and created barriers to forest recovery. The study evaluated factors including natural regeneration, soil seed banks, and landscape connectivity. It found that proximity to existing forest fragments is an important predictor of restoration success. The findings offer useful reference for planning and prioritizing forest restoration after large-scale disturbances in tropical landscapes.

New Zealand's forestry export sector faces spring weather risks, with NIWA forecasting an 80% chance El Niño reaches or exceeds strong intensity by late September, likely bringing unusually windy conditions. Recent years have seen wind damage from Gabrielle in 2023, 2025 events in Nelson Tasman, and a 2026 event in the southern North Island, causing out-of-cycle harvest increases that pushed supply into markets. Salvage operations have wound down in the North Island, while Nelson still has some way to go. Prices have been relatively even over the past 12 months; after a 7% drop in June, July and August rebounded above the 12-month average, with A Grade 3.9m at about $125/JAS at North Island ports and $115/JAS in the South Island. China's PMI fell to 49.2 from 50.3 in June, and Q2 growth was 4.3%, the lowest in three years. In-market log inventories dropped slightly to about 2.47 million cubic metres, with daily offtake just under 60,000 cubic metres. NZ supply is subdued due to weather and berthing problems at Gisborne. Shipping costs remain above US$40/JAS amid the Iran conflict. The domestic market shows tightening log supply, receding sawmill inventories, and strong demand for pruned logs.

Mission, British Columbia's forestry department posted a net loss of C$234,506 in the second quarter of 2026 but expects to be profitable by year end, according to a quarterly report presented at the Sept. 21 council meeting. Market uncertainty reduced harvest volumes; the department has released only 39 per cent of its budgeted volume to date. It had reported a net profit of C$301,844 in Q2 last year and projected C$733,511 for Q2 2026. The report cites U.S. tariffs and substantially higher fuel prices in 2026 as pressures on shipping costs, calling trade friction with the United States "one big challenge." Optimism stems from an expected year-end net profit, positive results anticipated in Q3 and Q4, and a large cutting permit from the province covering timber sales for 2027 and 2028. Mayor Paul Horn praised the department's work amid trade uncertainty and noted a meeting with the forests minister at the UBCM Convention on stumpage rates and processing delays.

Wildfires in Indonesian Borneo are burning in habitats that hold 52% of the island's orangutan population, including 13 of the 20 largest remaining groups, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The IUCN said fire and smoke impose measurable physiological, behavioral and ecological costs on orangutans in peat forest habitats; during haze the apes show signs of fat breakdown despite eating and resting more, suggesting higher energy demands. Fires were also reported in the habitats of five gibbon species across Sumatra and Borneo. Indonesia's forestry ministry said 100 animals, including 53 orangutans, had been rescued as of Tuesday. The government reported over 202,000 hectares burned from January to July, while the Nusantara Atlas project put the January-August figure near 900,000 hectares. Conservationists called for sustained investment in prevention, including protecting and rewetting peatlands, addressing drainage and deforestation, and restoring burned forests.

A study published in Science found that preventing forest fires and other disturbances is more effective than reforestation for protecting the Amazon's biodiversity and carbon stocks. Led by Lancaster University with partners in Brazil, Sweden and Australia, the research examined more than 3 million hectares in Santarém and Paragominas, Pará, between 2010 and 2020, using satellite imagery, field transects covering thousands of bird and tree species, and models of hypothetical biodiversity and carbon changes. Avoiding fires and forest degradation produced benefits close to those of halting deforestation. The authors noted that climate change and El Niño intensify drought and fire risk. Restoring deforested areas was valuable, especially where forest cover was almost entirely lost, but uniform restoration across the region was less effective than protecting existing forests and was the costliest strategy. They said net gains came only from combining protection and restoration, and that soy and beef companies should be responsible for both deforestation and forest degradation.

Brazil's IBGE released its 2025 survey on plant extraction and silviculture (PEVS), showing the country's forest production value reached R$47.9 billion, up 6.7% from 2024 and the highest ever recorded. Forestry activity was present in 4,889 municipalities, covering nearly the entire national territory. Growth came entirely from planted forests: silviculture generated R$41 billion (+8.6%), while extraction from native forests fell 3.1% to R$6.9 billion. Planted forests now account for 85.6% of total primary forest production value. Planted area rose 4.8%, adding nearly 500,000 hectares to reach 10.4 million hectares. Eucalyptus leads with 8.2 million hectares, or 78.6%, mainly supplying the pulp and paper industry; eucalyptus and pine together cover 96.5% of commercial silviculture. The Center-West saw the largest regional increase at 22.3%, while the Southeast was the only region to decline (-1.1%). Wood for pulp and paper reached R$17.6 billion (+16.3%), the third consecutive year of strong expansion. Pulp exports totaled 22.2 million tonnes and US$10.2 billion, though revenue fell 3.9% on lower prices. Minas Gerais led with R$9.2 billion, followed by Paraná at R$6.9 billion. Non-timber products grew 9.6% to R$2.6 billion.

A study published in Science compared three conservation strategies in the Amazon: preventing deforestation, preventing forest disturbances such as fires and logging, and restoring already-cleared areas. Led by Leonardo S. Miranda with a team of Brazilian and foreign researchers, the analysis covered more than 3 million hectares in the Santarém and Paragominas regions, using field data and high-resolution remote sensing. Results show that preventing forest disturbances could avoid 68.5% of biodiversity losses, while preventing deforestation could avoid 60.8% of carbon losses. Restoration alone would offset only 6.5% of biodiversity losses and 14.7% of carbon losses. Net gains in biodiversity and carbon relative to the initial state appeared only when protection against deforestation and degradation were combined. When economic costs were included, the gap widened: preventing disturbances was far more cost-effective than restoration for biodiversity, while preventing deforestation was most efficient for carbon. Even simulating a 95% reduction in restoration costs, restoration remained less economically efficient than preventing forest destruction or degradation beforehand. The authors note that restoration is not unnecessary, as the greatest benefits emerge when all three strategies are combined, but it should not serve as a substitute for conservation.

Mexico's federal environmental enforcement agency Profepa, together with the National Guard and the federal roads and bridges authority Capufe, closed an illegal access point used for forestry extraction. The entrance was located at kilometer 62+300 of the Mexico-Cuernavaca highway, on land belonging to the Coajomulco community. The closure targets an unauthorized route into forest land that facilitated the removal of timber. For the forestry sector, blocking such informal access points is one enforcement measure aimed at curbing illegal logging and the illegal transport of wood, and it involved coordination among federal, state and road-management authorities. The report did not specify how long the route had been in use, who was involved, or whether any timber was seized.

Oregon's annual forest health report, a joint effort by the Oregon Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service, says tree damage in 2025 stayed below the 10-year average, but a historically dry spring stressed western Oregon forests and emerald ash borer kept spreading in Washington County. Aerial surveys tallied about 181,500 acres of damage from insects, disease, and weather—excluding wildfire—or 0.7% of surveyed forest, with roughly 78% from drought stress and opportunistic beetles. Damage concentrated in the southwest and from east of the Cascades into central and northeastern Oregon. The state had its fourth-driest spring on record, with April–June precipitation 41% below normal. Bigleaf maples had scorched leaves, western redcedars continued thinning and dying back, and Oregon white oaks saw a peak year for leaf and twig pests, though damage was called nonlethal. Emerald ash borer, first confirmed in Forest Grove in 2022, continues to spread; of nine hotline reports confirmed in 2025, seven came from Forest Grove, and nine of 335 traps caught the beetle, a record at the time. Multnomah County joined a quarantine already covering Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas, and Marion counties, barring movement of ash, white fringe, or olive tree parts and all hardwood firewood. To slow the beetle, the forestry department helped release more than 20,000 parasitoids.

A wildfire in Calhoun County, Arkansas, that has burned for more than a week is nearly contained, according to a Forestry Division official. Spokesman Robert Murphy said resources have transitioned from all-day staffing to a monitoring phase, with at least one daily check planned for the next few days before declaring 100% containment. The Arkansas Department of Agriculture reports 1,489 wildfires so far this year, burning 37,974 acres. The state has activated the South Central Interstate Forest Fire Protection Compact, and task force teams from Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina have arrived to support response efforts. Of Arkansas's 75 counties, 67 are under a burn ban, including Ouachita, Columbia, and Union, and the entire state is at high risk for wildfires. The high risk level means fires ignite easily and spread quickly, and unattended brush fires and campfires are likely to escape. The department urges residents, landowners, and local fire agencies to report wildfires immediately and to check for a county burn ban before any outdoor burning.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia tested two complementary tools in Kelowna, Canada, to pinpoint urban heat hot spots and where new trees could help most. In the first study, published in Remote Sensing, an open-source machine-learning technique sharpened Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery from 30-meter to 10-meter resolution. The higher-resolution maps revealed nearly five times as much temperature variation; conventional imagery detected hot spots averaging about 18,000 square meters, while the 10-meter approach found ones as small as 700 square meters. Landscape features such as tree canopy and paved surfaces explained over 65% of the added detail. The second study, in Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, used the CanopyFit model to exclude unsuitable planting areas such as buildings, sports fields, underground utilities, wildfire buffer zones and sensitive ecosystems, then assess shade potential alongside heat exposure and social and economic need. It identified room for 248 hectares of new mature canopy, but just 20% of the analyzed area accounted for 50.8% of potential shade gains.

A new Brookings Institution paper argues that environmental crime is a major drag on sustainable development and climate action, not merely an ecological offense. Widely cited estimates put annual proceeds at $110 billion to $281 billion, though the real figure may be far higher. The authors say enforcement by rangers, customs and specialized police alone cannot address a problem embedded in trade, finance and local political economies. In Brazil's Pará state, illegally felled timber gains paperwork, is mixed with legal wood and has its provenance rewritten; investigators traced more than 25,000 cubic meters to importers in France, Germany, Portugal and the United States. The chainsaw logger is the cheapest link, while larger profits go to those financing equipment, arranging transport, manipulating permits and laundering proceeds into the legal economy.

Plant geneticist Alice Muchugi recalled that in 2024 fruit sellers near Harare, Zimbabwe, told her chainsaw-wielding men had felled some of the district's most productive wild loquat trees (Uapaca kirkiana) for wood to burn in brick kilns, cutting off a steady income source. The trees were cloned more than 20 years ago from superior mother trees at 25 locations across four countries and grown at the Landscape Alliance's field gene bank in Domboshava. The loss highlighted challenges facing both fruit collectors and plant geneticists. Fortunately, duplicates of most felled trees still exist in the organization's gene banks in Malawi and Zambia. A recent study shows that from 2000 to 2023, more than 500,000 square kilometers of miombo dry forest was lost across Angola, Burundi, southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, nearly 22% of the region's woodland cover. Malawi and Zimbabwe lost about 17,700 and 47,000 square kilometers respectively. Wild loquats are among at least 75 edible-fruit tree species in miombo woodlands.

A study published in Nature Climate Change by University of Arizona researchers analyzed over 40 years of satellite data tracking vegetation leaf area index and found that roughly 80% of global drylands are experiencing escalating instability. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide has stimulated plant growth in wet years, producing a persistent greening trend, but this masks severe year-to-year swings that leave ecosystems especially vulnerable in dry years. Lead author Wen Zhang said vegetation activity increases in wet years while dry years hit plants harder, with extremes growing farther apart over time. The team also evaluated leading global vegetation models and found they overestimate dryland stability. The boom-and-bust dynamic may result from rising CO2 combined with rainfall variability, though precise mechanisms need more data. The findings affect rain-fed agriculture, forage production and rangeland management.

A study led by Dartmouth College with the Appalachian Mountain Club used hundreds of satellite images spanning 40 years to provide the first regional analysis of greening trends in the northern Appalachian region of northeastern North America. Published in Ecosphere, it found that 69% of the alpine zones studied showed significant increases in vegetation, representing 88% of the region's alpine area. Unlike the Alps, where warming pushes the tree line higher, the changes here are occurring inside the alpine zone, with significant greening and shrubification as shrubs replace alpine plants. This was especially evident in New Hampshire's Presidential Range and Maine's Katahdin, affecting cliff plants, cushion-tussock and sedge meadows. The authors note the accelerated growth may not be positive if rare alpine plants are crowded out by more aggressive flora. The mountain chain runs about 800 kilometers from the Adirondacks to Quebec's Gaspé Peninsula, with nearly 70 million people living within a day's drive of an alpine zone.

Environmental watchdog Global Witness alleges that Mondelēz International, owner of Cadbury, Milka, Toblerone and Oreo, ran an extensive lobbying campaign to weaken and delay the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The law requires companies selling forest products such as cocoa in the EU to prove they were not produced on land deforested after Dec. 31, 2020; it was originally due in 2024 but is now set for Dec. 31, 2026. The report says CEO Dirk Van De Put met U.S. ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder in Brussels in June, months before a September 18 vote on regulatory simplifications. Mondelēz had backed due diligence rules with Mars, Ferrero and Nestlé, but broke ranks in July 2025 to seek a 12-month delay. Global Witness says Mondelēz spent 1.2–1.5 million euros on EU lobbying since 2023 and is the only major chocolate maker analyzed that does not disclose what share of its cocoa supply chain is deforestation-free. Mondelēz said it fully supports the EUDR's objectives and engages policymakers to ensure the regulation works in practice.

Robbe Neyns, a researcher at VUB in Brussels, has developed artificial intelligence that can identify trees down to the species level in satellite and aerial imagery, helping cities map trees and biodiversity as the climate warms. Existing tree inventories are often incomplete or outdated, and identifying thousands of trees on the ground is labor-intensive. Neyns combined satellite images from different seasons with highly detailed aerial photographs for the Brussels-Capital Region, using deep learning to train the system to recognize species. He defended his PhD dissertation on Sept. 9. He then applied the technology to ecological research: in Braunschweig, Germany, he mapped willow trees for research on the wild bee Andrena vaga, which depends heavily on willow pollen; in a second application, he linked tree species data to urban heat, air pollution and paving to study how urban stressors affect the annual growth cycles of different species. The work shows satellites, aerial photos and AI can do more than count greenery, helping cities decide which species to plant where.

Scientists at the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) are producing real-time maps of vegetation moisture across the United States and adjacent areas of Canada and Mexico, because dryness is a critical driver of wildfires while moist vegetation can slow a fire's advance and give crews time to contain it. The maps cover both living and dead vegetation, or fuel, and are updated hourly to daily depending on location on a dedicated NSF NCAR webpage. The team draws on advanced weather models and land-cover and atmospheric observations, including data from NASA and NOAA satellite instruments VIIRS and ABI, feeding a machine learning model that estimates moisture at resolutions as fine as 375 meters in the contiguous U.S. and Alaska and 750 meters in Hawaii. Started in 2023 and continually improved, the maps this year added separate estimates for trees, shrubs and grasses, since different plants store moisture or dry out on widely varying time scales. The Brazilian Federal Public Ministry (MPF) took part in a joint operation that uncovered illegal interventions and construction in a Permanent Preservation Area (APP) at Ervino beach in São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina. The action aimed to protect restinga vegetation and the local ecosystem. The August inspections followed complaints about irregular land subdivision and damage to mangrove and restinga areas. Authorities found native vegetation cleared, wetlands filled, and unauthorized access opened on marine lands owned by the federal government. They also identified early-stage buildings, illegal fencing, and machinery operating without environmental licenses. Those responsible have been fined and notified, and enforcement will continue to prevent new clandestine subdivisions. The task force plans further inspections.

The forested area of Tehuacán, Mexico, is shrinking due to disorderly urban sprawl. As of 2020, forest was the largest land use at 31,448 hectares, including the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve, Cerro Colorado, and other wildlife areas. Agricultural land covered 15,516 hectares, urban areas 5,585 hectares, and industrial land 1,251 hectares. Over three decades, private property has expanded into forest and hillside zones, even as settlements face risks from landslides, earthquakes, and subsidence. More than 80% of neighborhoods have high or very high seismic impact, with some, like Vista Hermosa, showing over 50% high vulnerability. At least 19 zones subside 1.87 to 2 centimeters per year. Over 80% of the land has high susceptibility, affecting 12 neighborhoods, 11 subdivisions, 5 housing units, and 5 towns. Experts say hillside areas require geophysical studies to detect risks, such as unstudied natural tunnels in the San Lorenzo hill plateau that could continue dissolving or collapsing, endangering homes.

A study titled "Production Chains, Industry and the Implementation of the Forest Code," launched on Wednesday the 23rd by IPAM (Amazon Environmental Research Institute) and CNI (National Confederation of Industry), identifies priority regions to mitigate socio-environmental risks and strengthen the competitiveness of strategic sectors such as soy, beef, silviculture, and bioindustry. The analysis examines progress of Law No. 12,651 of 2012 in the Amazon and Cerrado, combining data on agricultural production, deforestation, land tenure, the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), areas needing recovery, and vegetation conserved beyond legal minimums. Agriculture is the main economic activity in 83% of Amazon municipalities and 74% of Cerrado municipalities. CAR validation varies widely: over 60% of rural properties in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul have been assessed, while in newer expansion areas like Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia, the rate is below 1%, with some municipalities at zero. IPAM and CNI representatives stressed that converting the regulatory framework into concrete results is essential for Brazil's credibility and market position.

Biologists Kathrin Barboza, Luis Acosta and Nicolás Malpartida carried out Bolivia's first study of mammals living in the canopy of the Chiquitano Dry Forest, an ecoregion that links the Amazon and the Chaco. Between January and March 2023 they placed 12 camera traps at heights of four to 20 metres, collecting more than 12,000 photographs and 4,630 videos. The survey documented 11 mammal species using the canopy, including the brush-tailed mouse opossum (Glironia venusta), listed as Near Threatened in Bolivia and poorly known to science. The team believes the way the camera supports were built may have attracted the animal, yielding the largest number of records so far, and preliminarily identified at least five individuals. The authors say the canopy had remained largely unexplored, with no official Bolivian data, making the findings relevant for understanding biodiversity in one of the world's largest and best-preserved tropical dry forests.

An InfoAmazonia analysis based on data from Prodes, the monitoring system of Brazil's National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), compared Amazon deforestation under Lula's third term (2023-2026) with the government of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022). Using an average of 565 trees per hectare of Amazon Basin forest, a methodology developed by PlenaMata from a study by more than 100 scientists, the analysis converted deforested area into tree numbers and averaged them per day. It found the Amazon lost 690,000 fewer trees per day under Lula's third term. In area terms, deforestation fell 62% during Lula's first two terms, rose 54% under Bolsonaro, and has already dropped 51% in the third term compared with 2022. When Lula first took office in 2002, he inherited the century's highest rate, 27,700 square kilometres, after which Brazil created the Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm). Between 2004 and 2012 deforestation fell 83%, reaching a record low of 4,571 square kilometres in 2012. PPCDAm was discontinued in April 2019. Figures for 2026 are preliminary, but Deter alerts suggest the rate could fall below the 2012 record.

The Guadalquivir River Basin Authority (CHG) is carrying out restoration work in the Pinar del Pinto public forest in Hinojos, Huelva, with an investment of 1.46 million euros, running until October 2027. The pine stand, located in one of the most ecologically valuable areas around Doñana, is affected by tree decline and boring insects, which increase dry biomass and fire vulnerability. Work includes felling and removing affected trees, extracting and storing the timber, environmental signage and fencing, and preventive fire surveillance during the highest-risk season, alongside silvicultural improvement treatments. The CHG says the aim is to improve forest health, cut fire risk and create a more stable stand adapted to future climate conditions. Water Cycle and Ecosystem Restoration Commissioner Laura Martín Murillo noted that climate change and falling water tables are causing drought, pests and tree dieback in the area's pine forests, and that restoring the pine stand removes potential fire fuel.

On September 25, 2025, the Ethnic Affairs Committee of the Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Council monitored forest management, protection and development alongside socio-economic development in mountainous and ethnic minority areas of Thuong Quan commune, Bac Kan district. Thuong Quan has over 13,169 hectares of forest land, including more than 12,075 hectares of forest, with 69.8% forest cover. Local authorities and Forest Station No. 4 have contracted and supported protection for over 7,454 hectares. Bac Kan district has over 5,075 hectares of forest land, 4,772 hectares forested, and 66.28% cover; since July 1, 2025 it has handled two forest law violation cases. In 2025 the locality ran a contracted forest protection program covering over 1,335 hectares with a budget above 251.8 million VND, and promoted livelihoods such as non-timber forest product collection and processing and beekeeping for honey. The monitoring team noted difficulties from vast, complex terrain and limited staff, equipment and funding, and said some forest-related livelihood models still lack stable income. It urged stronger coordination, fire prevention, priority for poor households in forest protection, and study of effective forest-based livelihoods and carbon credit potential.

An international study published on September 17, 2026, in the journal Science concludes that protecting existing tropical forests from disturbances such as wildfires and selective logging is more cost-effective than restoring cleared lands. Led by scientists from Lancaster University with collaborators from the UK, Brazil, Sweden, and Australia, it is the first comparative analysis of conservation and restoration strategies in the Amazon. The research covered over 3 million hectares in the Santarém and Paragominas regions of Brazil's Pará state from 2010 to 2020. The team combined high-resolution satellite imagery with field data from 381 sampling transects across 38 watersheds and 499 rural properties, plus models mapping 160 bird and 426 tree species. They built counterfactual scenarios to assess how each strategy would have altered biodiversity and carbon stocks compared to actual outcomes, and estimated intervention costs. Avoiding forest disturbances produced the greatest biodiversity benefits and was nearly as important as preventing deforestation for carbon protection. Restoration on agricultural lands proved valuable, especially where most original cover was lost, but alone was less effective and the most expensive strategy. Net gains in biodiversity and carbon storage were achieved only when both protection interventions were applied, while combining all three strategies yielded even greater benefits.

A bill approved by Brazil's Congress would reduce the protected area of the Jamanxim National Forest (Flona do Jamanxim) in southwestern Pará, converting 486,000 hectares into a new Environmental Protection Area (APA) and opening the subsoil to mining. The bill has passed the Senate and awaits presidential sanction. APAs offer weaker protection than national forests and allow private properties within their limits. Data from WWF, the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA), and the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) show that 86,600 hectares have been illegally deforested and occupied since the forest's creation in 2006 in areas that could become APA, with 475 active mining claims identified. Created in 2006 to curb deforestation along the BR-163 highway, the 1.3-million-hectare Flona is a key block in a conservation mosaic. ISA lawyer Alice Dandara recalled that a similar reduction was proposed in 2017 under Michel Temer but stalled in subsequent governments. Because the federal government withdrew its original bill, MDB lawmaker Isnaldo Bulhões Jr. resubmitted it, resulting in the current PL 2,486/2026. In Rondônia, federal prosecutors are seeking to annul the reduction of Bom Futuro National Forest and return 182,000 hectares transferred to the state in 2010 to federal control.

According to Vietnam.vn, on the morning of September 25, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc met with associations and businesses exporting agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products. Participants proposed removing obstacles related to capital, taxes, land, raw material zones, traceability, and export procedures. Opinions stressed the need to shift from increasing production volume to improving quality, value, and the position of Vietnamese agricultural products in the global market. In the durian industry, Le Vu Tuan Anh, deputy general director of Chanh Thu, said Vietnam's durian output roughly tripled in five years, even surpassing Thailand's, but revenue remains lower. The share of high-quality products fell sharply while low-quality products rose, due to climate, overexploitation of trees, input use, and weak supply chain links. Rice, coffee, wood, and pangasius face similar challenges, including advanced processing, origin databases, branding, and traceable wood supply. Pangasius raw material prices once reached about 36,000 VND/kg while export prices converted to only about 33,000 VND/kg.

On September 24, 2026, a vegetation fire broke out in Tunjuelito, southern Bogotá, near the Colombian National Army's 13th Field Artillery Battalion General Fernando Landazábal Reyes. Videos on social media showed flames along the Tunjuelo River and a smoke column visible from various areas. Bogotá Firefighters dispatched an extinguishing machine and a tanker truck, later stating on X that the fire was controlled but still developing, with no injuries reported. The Army's Fifth Division said it deployed a joint operation with fire stations from Marichuela, Venecia, and Kennedy, using three fire engines, two Army tanker trucks, 15 firefighters, and a platoon of soldiers. The military suggested the fire may have been caused by a magnifying-glass effect from abandoned glass or plastic in the vegetation. Between 2019 and 2024, the locality recorded 101 incidents related to forest fires and burning, mostly near the Tunjuelo River and El Tunjo wetland. In June 2025, authorities tackled another fire caused by illegal tire burning near the river. The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies included Bogotá and several Cundinamarca municipalities in forest fire alerts, with a bulletin as of September 22 classifying risk as red, orange, and yellow; Nilo and Topaipí were under red alert. District entities continued inspections in Quiba village, which will determine measures for residents and affected lands.

Chengkou County in Chongqing is using collective forest tenure reform to turn mountain forest resources into collateralizable assets, addressing difficulties in forest asset valuation, insufficient collateral and limited financing channels. By the end of August 2026, the county’s green loan balance reached 3.124 billion yuan, up 43.22 percent year on year. Chengkou completed vectorized confirmation of 3.75 million mu of collective forest land, cut forest tenure transfer processing from 20 days to five, and piloted a “three certificates and one right” reform covering forest land management rights, community forest management rights, forestry income rights and ownership of under-forest production facilities. It launched the “Chenglin Loan” series and a three-tier credit evaluation system. By August, it had rated more than 12,000 creditworthy forest households, 173 credit villages and 23 credit townships, issuing 22 million yuan in forest management right mortgage loans, 12 million yuan in forestry income right pledges and 2 million yuan in under-forest facility mortgages, with cumulative Chenglin loans exceeding 80 million yuan. A government-insurance-guarantee risk-sharing mechanism and a forestry financing risk compensation fund were also established. The county has built nine forest health bases and over 2,000 forest homestays, with annual forestry ecological industry output exceeding 3 billion yuan.

At a welcome banquet hosted by Trump on the 24th, President Xi Jinping told the story of an American retired teacher, known as "Cycas," who funded Chinese sand-control pioneer Yin Yuzhen to plant trees. Cycas, whose real name is Ronald Sokolski, was teaching at a foreign language school in Luoyang, Henan, in 1999 when he was moved by Yin's work afforesting the Mu Us Sandy Land. He contacted several U.S. institutions and donated 5,000 dollars to support her. In 2000 he visited Mu Us and planted a tree with her. Since planting her first saplings in 1986, Yin has spent more than 30 years turning over 60,000 mu of barren sand into green land, while the roughly 38,000-square-kilometer Mu Us Sandy Land has been transformed from barren desert into forest. In May 2026 Yin launched an online search for Cycas and reconnected with him by video 26 hours later; three months afterward he traveled to China for a reunion spanning 26 years.

In her doctoral dissertation, Liisa Varumo examines the environmental justice of market-based and place-based conservation approaches and how they can contribute to just sustainability transformations in biodiversity conservation. Conservation instruments have diversified significantly in recent decades, driven by the need to broaden funding and involve more people and organizations in halting biodiversity decline. That broader involvement can be positive, but often brings new and complex justice challenges. The dissertation is based on four articles: interviews on the social acceptance of biodiversity offsets in Finland; case studies of offset schemes by international mining companies in Finland and Colombia, focusing on recognition justice; two place-based approaches, the co-management of the Näätämö River in Finland and recognition of the rights of the Ranchería River in Colombia; and an international literature review on environmental justice in market-based conservation instruments. The research shows local communities' experiences of injustice often stem from limited participation opportunities, marginalization of local knowledge and values, and unequal power relations, rooted in broader structures that prioritize economic growth, reinforce Western science's dominance and concentrate decision-making authority at higher levels. Varumo says changing such structures is difficult and slow but essential for transformative change.

The Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF), launched by Brazil at COP30, has raised about $7.3 billion in initial sponsor capital toward a $10 billion goal by the end of 2026, to compensate tropical forest countries for preservation. After the 2025 U.N. climate conference in Belém, over 60 nations endorsed its launch declaration, but financial commitments have since slowed. Only Luxembourg and the U.K. have pledged government funds this year, totaling about $600 million, plus $5 million from The Nature Conservancy. The fund has under four months to raise $2.7 billion. Norway's $3 billion pledge depends on reaching $10 billion and cannot exceed 20% of total capital, requiring at least $15 billion for full release. A governance charter has been published, but structure and operational parameters remain under discussion.

A study in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences used remotely sensed data on Alaskan wildfires from 1984 to 2020 to examine fires encountering previously burned areas. It found that young vegetation in recent burns strongly suppressed later fire, with reburning rates 1–3 orders of magnitude lower than in older forests, and burned perimeters often acting as barriers. A model estimated that without this negative feedback, Alaska would have seen five times more wildfires over 40 years. Extreme fire weather significantly weakened the effect, especially in young forests, but modeled future climate change did not completely negate it. Past fires limited new fire activity about twice as strongly in Alaska as in the contiguous western U.S. The results could help fire managers assess burned areas as natural firebreaks based on age and fire weather.

Twenty Australian projects, including the Sydney Fish Market, the A$135 million Adelaide Aquatic Centre and the University of Tasmania's The Forest, have been shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival in Florida, described as the world's biggest live-judged architecture awards. Before presenting to juries in Fort Lauderdale, all three are finalists in the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards, whose winners are named in Sydney next month, eight days before the National Architecture Awards in Brisbane. Kylan Low, the Timber Development Association structural engineer organising the awards, told Wood Central that a project's place in the awards creates a "crowding effect" and "a foundation for it to go and win other awards too"; last year's Commercial Building winner took the Harry Seidler Award, the top national commercial architecture prize, less than a month later. Designed by 3XN with BVN and Aspect Studios, the Fish Market has a roof of 594 glulam beams fabricated by Rubner in northern Italy and shipped to Sydney in oversized sections; it is also shortlisted in the festival's Mixed-Use category. The Aquatic Centre, by JPE Design Studio, Warren and Mahoney and Karl Winda Telfer, is a finalist in the new Sports and Recreation category and on the festival's Sport shortlist; its 52 timber beams and columns, some up to 37 metres long, were milled in Austria, and the South Australian government counts one as the country's largest wooden beam. Woods Bagot's The Forest is a finalist twice, in Public Building and Sustainability, and is shortlisted nationally for Educational Architecture and Sustainable Architecture.

New Zealand is targeting India as a new market for radiata pine products, with the value chain pitching sawn timber and engineered wood products alongside the logs that have so far dominated trade. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise is urging exporters to lead with engineered wood products and seasoned, graded timber in a country that imports only 10 per cent of its timber needs. The push follows Parliament passing legislation to enact a free trade agreement signed by Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay and India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Wood processors and scientists exhibited at MumbaiWood last week under the New Zealand pavilion, where Dr Henri Bailleres of New Zealand's Bioeconomy Science Institute met Dr Shakti Chauhan, director of India's Institute of Wood Science and Technology, to discuss cooperation from joint research to fumigation protocols and market access. New Zealand's radiata pine trade with India peaked at $326 million in 2019 before a methyl bromide dispute cut it to $9.5 million by 2023; it has since been restored after logs were allowed to enter again in early 2025. Wood exports to India have tripled to $193 million over three years, with logs accounting for $122 million. More than 95 per cent of New Zealand's forestry and wood products will enter India tariff-free once the agreement takes effect next month; most wood lines currently face duties of 5.5 to 11 per cent, with remaining duties phased out over seven years.

The paper, co-authored by Levente Denes, Balázs Bencsik and Eduardo Sosa, was published online ahead of the 17 October issue of Construction and Building Materials. The authors said most computer models of hardwood cross-laminated timber have treated layers as perfectly bonded and could not show glue giving way; the new results can be fed into those models, with their own model picking the cracking point with reasonable accuracy. Tests used boards just 10 millimetres thick; next steps include upscaling to full-size samples and validating against real-world performance.

Hardwood sawmills in Europe are pushing for more of the continent's logs to be processed domestically, as buyers outside the EU compete for the same timber, according to the European Organisation of the Sawmill Industry (EOS). The group raised the issue with German Greens MEP Martin Häusling at a sawmill in Hesse. Roland Feit, sales executive director at Abalon Hardwood, said conditions should be set so raw materials are processed in Europe wherever possible. EOS economic affairs director Diego Benedetti said European policy must avoid extra burdens and enable investment in modern, resource-efficient processing, especially after many recent closures. EOS counts 32,000 sawmills across member federations in 14 countries and says the industry employs 220,000 people in the EU. EOS and Germany's DeSH say exporting unprocessed roundwood costs jobs and investment, particularly in rural areas. EU countries exported €647.6 million of hardwood logs outside the bloc last year, up from €605.7 million in 2024, with China taking €383.5 million and Vietnam €159.6 million. Oak accounted for €335.0 million, including €250.5 million bought by China.

A commentary argues that the biodiversity credit market should not copy carbon markets’ approach of reducing everything to a single tradable unit, and should instead measure success by how continuously and independently a claim can be verified. It notes that estimates of the global biodiversity credit market for 2025 vary widely, at roughly $90 million, $7.1 billion and $5.7 billion—a nearly 80-fold gap for the same year. The author says this is not merely a data lag, but reflects the fact that a hectare of mangrove forest is not interchangeable with a hectare of grassland, and the market lacks a shared definition comparable to carbon’s tCO2e. Researchers assessing suppliers against integrity criteria set by bodies such as the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits have found tension between achieving “commensurability” and genuine ecological meaning in a single metric, and some in the field are discussing a more plural approach using several honest metrics. The piece also cites carbon’s own record: a nine-month investigation in January 2023 by The Guardian, Die Zeit and Source Material found that more than 90 percent of rainforest offset credits certified by Verra, the world’s largest carbon credit certifier, were problematic.

A survey published this year by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology shows timber is increasingly used in new school buildings. Of 515 public school facilities built in fiscal 2024, 408 (79.2 per cent) used wood, including 318 concrete or steel frames lined with timber systems. These new and refurbished schools consumed more than 35,000 cubic metres of timber, storing over 22,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Over six years, hybrid schools rose from 39.1 to 61.7 per cent of new buildings, while wood-framed schools fell from 22.6 to 17.5 per cent. New school buildings dropped from 760 to 515, with primary schools least likely to use wood at 30 of 243. Timber use fell from 48,185 cubic metres in the year to March 2022 to 36,681 in the latest count. Japanese forests supplied 81 per cent of timber used in wooden buildings. Tokyo's 2010 wood-use law has covered private buildings since 2021, and the education ministry has made timber linings standard in funded school works since the year to March 2023.

At the Global Legal and Sustainable Timber Forum in Macao this week, Che Weng Keong, president of Macao's Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), said in his opening address that President Xi Jinping has committed China to working with other nations on forest conservation and "responsible timber trade." The forum gathered more than 800 delegates from 49 countries. Che said the common challenge is balancing conservation and development while ensuring timber is legally sourced, transparently traded and sustainably used. New modelling by resource economist Dr Tyron Venn found 61.3 per cent of wood China imports comes from nations at elevated risk of illegal harvesting. Mozambique sent senior officials for the first time, with its national director of Forests and Wildlife saying his government wants to rewrite its forestry pact with Beijing. China imported US$16.3 billion of wood and wooden furniture last year and exported $29.8 billion. African nations supplied $792 million of those imports, led by Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and Cameroon. Six new initiatives launched on opening day included a price index on the Global Timber Index and a blockchain timber traceability and trading system now operating in Macao.

Canada's forest industry is the latest to oppose the European Union's deforestation regulation as it stands, warning that its producers could face tens of millions of dollars in unnecessary costs from plot-by-plot tracing even though Canada is rated low risk. The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) urged Canada and the EU to address the regulation on the eve of Prime Minister Mark Carney's address to the European Parliament last Thursday. FPAC president and CEO Derek Nighbor said the Canada-EU relationship has long been built on trust, shared values and rules-based trade, and wants the regulation implemented in a way that recognizes Canada's leading position in third-party forest certification and its growing wildfire risks. Weeks earlier, more than 1,000 members of America's forestry community urged President Donald Trump to press the EU to scrap plot-by-plot traceability for the United States. The EU's low-risk label spares importers a formal risk assessment, but the plot-by-plot geolocation rule still applies to every shipment. FPAC also warned that low-risk exporters such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand face practical problems with plot-level tracing, large data uploads and handling forest residuals. In May, Canadian, Australian, US, Japanese and New Zealand groups told the European Commission that a single pulp or paper shipment can draw on thousands of plots and a container can require tens of thousands of geolocation data points, asking to remove forest residuals and sawmill by-products from the product list for low-risk countries and to set geolocation at country rather than plot level. The Commission later ruled out reopening the regulation in its simplification review, saying its measures would cut annual compliance costs by 75% versus the original.

Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung has asked ministries and localities to prioritize livelihood security while adjusting the 2021-2030 forestry plan, with a vision to 2050. The plan must balance three objectives: ensuring economic growth and meeting set targets, prioritizing people's livelihoods on the social front, and aligning economic development with environmental protection. A representative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, assessing the implementation of the national forestry plan for 2021-2025, said that despite achievements, some targets remain unmet: the total planned forest area nationwide exceeds 15.5 million hectares, below the 15.8 million hectares expected by 2030; the average annual growth rate of forestry output is 4.8%, below the 5%-5.5% target; and forest product exports in 2025 exceeded US$18 billion, equivalent to 91.6% of the US$20 billion target. Reasons include a lack of alignment among planning data, land use planning and forestry plans; deforestation, forest land encroachment and illegal logging still occurring in some areas; limited investment resources for protection and development; substandard infrastructure such as forest fire prevention; limited application of science and technology and digital transformation; and databases not synchronized with other sectors. Dak Lak province has more than 1 million hectares of forest and forest land, with forest coverage exceeding 41%, including 743,171 hectares of forest land and 310,386 hectares of non-forest land; at the end of 2025, the provincial People's Committee approved Plan No. 0139 to implement the national forestry plan, defining directions for forest management, protection and development, added value of forest products, restoration of forest resources and improvement of people's livelihoods.

The forest fire on Casitagua hill in Quito, Ecuador, remained active for five days in Pomasqui and was declared controlled on Monday, September 21. By Wednesday, September 23, the Quito Fire Department reported no hot spots detected, but monitoring will continue using its optical-thermal forest system and drones, with internal temperatures within normal parameters. The municipality estimates 300 hectares consumed, with loss of endemic flora and displacement of local fauna. The fire led to unexpected findings: on the weekend of September 19-20, two half-buried coffins were found on a southern slope near a ravine, later confirmed to be filled with earth and with no signs of human remains. Later, a section of rock-carved seating was discovered near the Radioloma archaeological site, which technicians from the Metropolitan Institute of Heritage said could be of Inca origin. The institute examined four archaeological sites on the eastern flanks of Casitagua after the fire was controlled on September 21. The fire cleared vegetation, making the structure more visible, but it does not mean it was unaffected. The Pomasqui community, including the Santa Clara, San José, and Cuba neighborhoods, provided tools, water, and labor to help control the flames threatening to reach inhabited areas. Wildlife also suffered, as the area is near the Chocó Andino reserve in northwestern Quito. Videos of spectacled bears supposedly fleeing were viral on social media, but the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve clarified they were not from the recent event. The Fire Department shared an analysis by biologist Santiago Ron, noting that lizards, páramo rabbits, nesting birds, insects, and other invertebrates must not only escape high temperatures.

Forestry production in Bahia fell 13.2% in 2025 from a year earlier to 1.952 billion reais, the first decline after five consecutive years of growth, according to IBGE. The drop came entirely from silviculture, the commercial planting of forests, whose value slipped 14.3% but still accounted for 91.7% of the state's forestry output, or nine of every ten reais. Bahia ranked seventh nationally in silviculture value. Plant extraction generated 161.4 million reais, up 0.9%, keeping Bahia ninth nationwide. Brazil's primary forestry output rose for a sixth straight year to a record 47.9 billion reais, up 6.7%, with silviculture contributing 41.0 billion reais, up 8.6%, while extraction fell 3.1% to 6.9 billion reais. Bahia stayed eighth nationally with 4.1% of the total; Minas Gerais led at 9.4 billion reais. Among Bahia's three surveyed silviculture products, charcoal and firewood volumes declined while roundwood was the only gainer, rising 17.1% to 17.5 million cubic meters from 14.9 million, lifting the state from seventh to fifth nationally, though roundwood value dropped 15.1% to 1.6 billion reais. Caravelas, Nova Viçosa and Mucuri ranked in the national top ten for roundwood output.

A 73-year-old man died while trying to fight a forest fire on his own in a rural area of Ibague, Tolima, Colombia. Carlos Eduardo Mosquera, known locally as El Indio, was killed in the village of Morrochusco in the Coello Cocora district. Giovanny Posada, director of environment and risk management for Ibague, said investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of death, examining whether it resulted from the fall, smoke inhalation or direct contact with flames. Preliminary information suggests the man slipped on a slope near the fire and fell into it, suffering severe burns. He had lived for two decades on a local farm, where he cared for the property and grew cassava, while also selling cassava at the city's Plaza de la 21 wholesale market. The fire caused no damage to homes or other structures, affecting only vegetation. The mayor's office expressed solidarity with the family and announced support, while authorities urged residents not to intervene without training or protective equipment.

Spain's forest fires continued to slow in September, extending a trend that began in mid-August. According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), 299,501 hectares burned between January 1 and September 23, 23% less than the same period last year but triple the average since records began in 2006. Most of the burned area was concentrated in summer, especially from July to mid-August, while September saw continued easing; in the last recorded week, 472 hectares burned and two fires were registered. EFFIS also reported that cumulative CO2 emissions linked to the fires far exceed the 2003-2025 historical average. Spain is again the EU country hardest hit by fires, ahead of Italy, France, Portugal and Greece, with the Mediterranean arc the most affected European region. The Ecological Transition Ministry, using regional data, counted 273,420 hectares burned from January 1 to September 13, 150% above the average since 2016, with 44 large fires, over half of the area wooded.

Heilongjiang Province has issued an implementation plan for building a Beautiful China pioneer zone, after being selected in December 2025 as one of five provincial-level pioneer zones nationwide. Heilongjiang is a key forestry and ecological barrier province, with about 20 million hectares of forest, a forest coverage rate above 45 percent and forest stock exceeding 2.3 billion cubic meters. Its natural forest and wetland areas rank among the highest in China, and the Greater and Lesser Khingan Mountains are national key ecological function areas. Shao Weigeng, deputy director of the provincial Forestry and Grassland Bureau, said the bureau will focus on creating a model area for ecological protection and restoration. The plan calls for building forest ecological barriers in the Khingan and Changbai mountains, a protected area system led by national parks, coordinated development of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, and an integrated sky-space-ground monitoring network. By 2030, protected areas should account for over 18.5 percent of the province’s land, forest ecological conservation projects should cover 19.25 million mu cumulatively, 250,000 mu of degraded grassland should be treated, 30,000 mu of wetlands restored, and at least two national and five provincial important wetlands added. It also promotes the Three-North project and Horqin sandy land control, with comprehensive monitoring coverage to reach over 95 percent by 2030, and strengthens prevention of invasive species such as pine wood nematode and fall webworm.

Qingyuan's forest fire prevention command office held a Sept. 24 briefing on autumn-winter fire control. The emergency management, forestry and public security bureaus reported no major forest fires or casualties in the first nine months of the year, but warned that heavy understory fuel loads and overlapping agricultural and ritual burning are raising pressure. The city enters a special protection period on Oct. 1. Of 161 hotspots in the previous period, farming-related burning and brush clearing accounted for over 80 percent, with peaks in the October-November harvest, the January-February Spring Festival and March plowing seasons. A revised regulation took effect Jan. 1 with six chapters and 63 articles, adding a people-first principle. Controlled agricultural burning may be applied for within 200 meters of forest edges, subject to prior approval and six prohibitions. Officials said illegal burning that causes a forest fire affecting 30 mu or more constitutes a criminal offense.

Jining held a Sept. 22 press conference on its forest fire prevention work. Zhang Huashan, head of the city's emergency management bureau, said Jining has 3.28 million mu of forest land, including six key fire-prevention counties, 28 key townships and 10 state-owned forest farms. Complex terrain, scattered hills and dry autumn-winter-spring seasons make fire source control difficult. In the previous fire season, the city used its forest chief system to assign responsibility across four levels: local governments, supervising departments, forest farm operators and village forest rangers, covering all 635 grid units. All 434 mountain entry checkpoints were staffed, with strict rules on prohibited acts and fire source confiscation. A total of 255 video monitoring channels ran around the clock. Sixty-nine firefighting teams with 1,376 personnel were on duty and forward-deployed, while 45,000 pieces of equipment in 24 categories were stockpiled at city and county levels for unified, digitally coordinated dispatch.

China's National Afforestation Committee Office issued guidelines to deepen nationwide voluntary tree planting, stressing public benefit, broad participation, scientific and frugal methods, and combined planting and management. The guidelines cover four areas: raising awareness through outreach to government bodies, communities, villages, schools and enterprises, with standardized certificates, cross-regional recognition and incentive points; diversifying participation beyond planting and tending to include nature protection, tree adoption, facility construction, donations and volunteering, plus "voluntary planting plus" models; expanding sites, using urban corner and vacated land and rural roadside, wasteland and farmland shelterbelt planting; and building an online platform for registration and certificates, tied to major programs such as the Three-North project. The guidelines call for stronger organization, no coerced assignments, priority for native species, avoidance of allergenic and catkin-producing plants, and no wasteful showcase projects.

At the 2026 Yichun Forest Food Industry High-Quality Development Conference held on September 20, results of a birch sap project led by the Heilongjiang Forestry and Grassland Bureau and undertaken by a Northeast Forestry University research team were released. A standardized nutrition database and an authenticity fingerprint library covering birch sap across Heilongjiang were completed. The database contains 1,717 valid samples collected from Mohe in the north to the southern foothills of Zhangguangcai Ridge. Birch sap is a core category of Heilongjiang's "Nine Treasures and Eighteen Products" forestry public brand, but the industry lacks basic data and product quality varies. The database and fingerprint library fill this gap and can help verify authenticity and regulate market competition. Next, the bureau and the research team will continue improving the database, turn fingerprinting and testing methods into standards, and develop rapid testing technologies to support national standard-setting for the birch sap industry.

Hardy kiwifruit, known locally as "ruanzaozi," is a wild fruit native to the Changbai Mountains and widely distributed in eastern Liaoning's mountainous areas. Since 2013, the Liaoning Economic Forestry Research Institute has systematically introduced local wild resources and domesticated the fruit in mountainous and hilly areas of eastern and southern Liaoning. After more than a decade of research, the team achieved breakthroughs across germplasm resources, new variety breeding, seedling propagation, tree shaping, and post-harvest preservation. Two varieties, "Lüjüren" and "Ruanfengxiang," passed on-site substantive examination for plant variety rights by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. "Lüjüren" passed Liaoning's improved variety approval in February 2026, with an average fruit weight of 27.8 grams. "Ruanfengxiang" averages 15.65 grams per fruit, contains 273 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams, and can yield 30,000 kilograms per hectare at peak production. The team also developed rapid seedling propagation, storage and preservation techniques, and a "one trunk, two canes plus artificial vine hanging" training system, which became a Liaoning local standard in 2023. Regional trials show eight-year-old orchards yield over 1,000 kilograms per mu, worth 15,000 yuan per mu at a wholesale price of 15 yuan per kilogram. The hanging-vine cultivation technology has been promoted on over 10,000 mu in Kuandian, Zhuanghe, and other areas.

Recently, the Guangxi branches of Ping An Property Insurance and China Pacific Property Insurance delivered 7.14 million yuan in policies to three enterprises, including Guilin Guanyang Shangnong Agricultural Development Co. and Jinniu Family Farm. These are Guangxi's first yield insurance policies for lingzhi mushrooms and sarcandra. Guanyang County has 2.223 million mu of forest land and a forest coverage rate of 76.36%, and is home to many genuine medicinal herbs such as sarcandra, lingzhi, and polygonatum. By the end of 2025, the county's under-forest economy covered 1.0456 million mu, with total output value exceeding 1.32 billion yuan, directly increasing income for 75,000 people. Based on local under-forest industry conditions, Guanyang County partnered with Ping An and Pacific insurance companies to develop yield insurance for sarcandra and lingzhi, building a dual guarantee system combining "forest-grass loans plus under-forest insurance." The first batch of policies covers a pilot area of 1,500 mu, including 500 mu of lingzhi and 1,000 mu of sarcandra. The insurance will compensate for yield losses caused by floods, droughts, pests, and other disasters. Previously, Guanyang also launched "Guangxi Forest-Grass Loan," the country's first pure credit loan product for the under-forest economy.

New South Wales will import the hardwood it no longer harvests from the Great Koala National Park, or replace it with fibreglass and steel, according to Timber NSW president Andrew Hurford. Speaking on ABC Mid North Coast, he said this shift would harm the environment more than the carbon credits behind the park predict. The Minns government plans to fund the 476,000-hectare reserve by selling credits from 176,000 hectares of state forest. Hurford warned that timber power poles are being replaced by fibreglass made from petrochemical resins and steel made from coal and iron ore, both with higher emissions than local timber production. Federal Labor says the method applies conservative discounts for carbon leakage. ANU professor Frank Jotzo said the park might not have proceeded without the credits, while UNSW's Megan Evans rejected that premise.

A new aerial survey by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the USDA Forest Service found that while tree death and damage last year was below the 10-year average, drought remains a key stressor for Oregon's forests. Precipitation returned to normal in 2025, but spring was the fourth driest on record. About 181,500 acres showed death or damage, less than half the 2022 peak. Damage affected 0.7 percent of forested acres in 2025, versus 0.8 percent in 2024 and 1.8 percent in 2022, when Oregon had 30 million forested acres. Eastern Oregon saw the highest rates, led by Union County at 2.4 percent, followed by Umatilla at 1.24 percent and Harney at 1.12 percent; coastal counties had the lowest. Drought combined with opportunistic beetles accounted for 78 percent of visible damage, mainly hitting Douglas-fir, true fir and pine. Common disease levels were largely unchanged, but sudden oak death continues spreading north and northwest in Curry County by about three to five miles a year.

The European Commission's rewrite of the EU Deforestation Regulation's product list took effect on Friday. Under Delegated Regulation 2026/2102, published in the Official Journal, timber traders, pallet makers and furniture suppliers selling into Europe no longer need to trace bamboo, rattan, or used and second-hand wood to a forest plot. Used and second-hand goods under headings for logs, sawn timber, plywood, joinery and furniture are excluded, as the old wording risked discouraging circular practices. Bamboo and rattan also fall outside the rules, though the timber in mixed products still requires due diligence. Sawmill chips and sawdust under heading 4401 get no used-goods exclusion unless they qualify as waste or single-use packing. New pallets sold alone still need due diligence, while single-use and reusable pallets moving goods are out of scope. Casks, paper packaging, labels and negligible-value trade samples are also excluded. Products newly added to the list face the rules only from 30 December 2027.

Malaysian and international civil society groups released a report, “Plundering the Baram Peace Park,” at a Kuala Lumpur press conference on Aug. 27, saying a conservation area that Indigenous communities in Sarawak hoped to co-manage and self-govern has been turned into a timber concession and stripped of tree cover. The report, led by Swiss nonprofit Bruno Manser Fonds, calls on NGOs and the Malaysian government to recognize logging of primary forest and alleged irregularities in granting the concession and informing affected communities. It also raises concern that the International Tropical Timber Organization continued funding projects in the area after a 2024 coalition of Indigenous communities, the Sarawak government and civil society collapsed. The Upper Baram Forest Area was proposed as the Baram Peace Park from 2009 to 2024. In 2021 the forest department submitted a proposal to ITTO and raised $1.4 million for a program with 32 Indigenous villages across 283,500 hectares. But in 2024 a 170,000-hectare timber concession was granted to Borneoland Timber Resources, overlapping key sites. Major funders left and the forest department withdrew the larger park project. The forest department director said the project was intended as an “integrated landscape management area,” which could include park elements, community use areas and a timber license.

On Sept. 22, 2006, Nepal’s then forest minister Gopal Rai handed over management of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area to local communities, hailed as a milestone in the country’s conservation history. The next day, the delegation’s Mi-8 helicopter crashed, killing all 20 passengers and four crew, including the forest minister, his spouse, senior officials, a Finnish diplomat, a senior USAID official and WWF staff. Two decades later, the community-based conservation approach pioneered by “dreamers” killed in the crash still drives wildlife and forest recovery: Nepal’s tiger population has more than tripled and forest cover has grown by six percentage points. But conservationists say progress has stagnated. The crash left vacancies at key conservation institutions, and WWF lost seven staff, the single greatest loss of life in its 45-year history. One conservationist describes the past two decades as replacement rather than continuity, saying visionaries who dream and see it through have grown scarcer, possibly due to government instability and weakening individual commitment.

Researchers led by Wolfram Weckwerth at the University of Vienna compared the genomes of three Clusia species with different photosynthetic phenotypes—Clusia rosea, Clusia minor and Clusia major—combining molecular data with measurements of plant function under realistic conditions. All three species proved to be ancient polyploids whose genomes were duplicated and later reorganized and reduced, with genes tied to nocturnal CO2 storage especially affected. This genomic plasticity, the team says, explains the genus's wide range of strategies, from conventional C3 photosynthesis to strong CAM. Clusia is the only known tree genus using CAM. The findings appeared in Nature Communications.

In the central Andean community of Villa de Arma, in Peru's Huancavelica region at about 3,200 meters above sea level, residents say ice and snow have largely given way to bare rock. Climate change has erased roughly 56% of Peru's glacier mass over the past six decades, and glaciers are a key water source for the country's cities and arid regions. The community of about 600 people sits in a watershed feeding the Chincha Valley and relies mainly on livestock and farming, with longer dry seasons already affecting both. In 2025, Peruvian NGO ECOAN partnered with international NGO Global Forest Generation on the Yaku Pacha project, which aims to restore a 16-hectare wetland and high-altitude Polylepis forests to strengthen the watershed's water storage and release capacity. Scientists including Imperial College London hydrology professor Wouter Buytaert continue to debate the effectiveness of nature-based solutions across different contexts, though he says uncertainty is no excuse for inaction.

Delaware State Forester Kyle Hoyd joined forestry leaders from across the Chesapeake Bay watershed last week to renew an agreement on conserving, restoring and managing forests in the region. The renewed Chesapeake Bay Shared Stewardship Agreement builds on a version first signed in 2020. The memorandum brings together the U.S. Forest Service and forestry agencies from Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, plus Washington, D.C., to coordinate forest management and restoration across state and jurisdictional boundaries. Hoyd said the agreement reflects the idea of working for the land so it works for people, from wood products to clean water. Delaware's implementation will emphasize science-based forestry practices on public and private land, addressing forest health, tree regeneration, water quality, wildlife habitat and the long-term sustainability of working forests. The watershed covers about 64,000 square miles and more than 18 million people; roughly 80 percent of its forests are privately owned. From 2013 through 2022, about 176,845 acres of forest were converted to development across the watershed, according to the Delaware Forest Service. About 30 percent of Delaware lies within the watershed. The renewed agreement also supports goals in the 2025 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement, which identifies Healthy Forests and Trees as part of the region's long-term restoration strategy.

To mark Tree Day, the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) inaugurated on Monday, the 21st, the new facilities and modernization of the Forest Nursery of its Department of Forest Sciences. The upgrade is part of the Recovery and Support for Forest Nursery Infrastructure subprogram, within the Compensation Program for Impacts on Fauna of the 500 kV Xingó-Camaçari transmission line, managed by Pedras Transmissora de Energia S.A. The investment, made possible as environmental compensation by Elecnor Brasil, is part of the licensing of the transmission lines between Xingó and Camaçari. With the improvements, the nursery will expand its annual production capacity from 20,000 to 50,000 seedlings, aiming to reach 80,000 within 24 months. Production will mainly serve ecological restoration and rehabilitation of degraded habitats in the Sergipe semi-arid region. The site received an automated irrigation system, elevated metal benches, and new materials for seedling management. UFS rector André Maurício said the space can support teaching, research, and extension. Environmental management coordinator Ítallo Romany Nunes Menezes noted that some native tree seedlings will also contribute to afforestation and vegetation enrichment on UFS campuses as part of the ReflorestaUFS project. IBAMA’s Romeu Boto Neto highlighted the legacy of structure and seedlings for Sergipe. Elecnor representative Sebastião Pinheiro stressed the importance of seedlings for environmental preservation amid climate challenges.

Between 2000 and 2024, the four river basins of Beni (Bolivia), Caquetá (Colombia), Madre de Dios (Peru), and Caroní (Venezuela) lost about 33,000 hectares of natural water, an area equivalent to more than twice the Tayrona National Natural Park. An analysis of 722 micro-basins in those territories found that water is under pressure from mining, cattle ranching, deforestation, hydroelectric dams, and climate change. The paradox is that although maps may show more water, most of these “new” water sources are linked to legal and illegal mining and cannot be used. Of the micro-basins where new mining ponds appeared, 64 are in indigenous territories. Mongabay Latam investigative journalist Vanessa Romo reported on this. The findings highlight risks for Amazonian communities that depend on these water sources for drinking.

The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) launched a study on Wednesday (23rd) in Brasília titled "Production Chains, Industry and Implementation of the Forest Code: Strategic Inputs to Support Environmental Compliance and Brazilian Competitiveness." The report states that implementing the Forest Code (Law 12,651/2012) has moved beyond legal compliance to become a strategic asset for Brazil's insertion into global markets and the international climate agenda. CNI natural resources manager Mário Cardoso said a regulation that is approved and published but not implemented creates a serious credibility problem in international markets, hurting Brazilian production and the population. IPAM public policy director Gabriela Savian stressed the need to link Forest Code regularization to restoration financing. Environment Ministry representative Nazaré Soares outlined challenges for the zero-deforestation goal by 2030, noting that environmental regularization goes beyond the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) and involves the Environmental Regularization Program (PRA). The study mapped socio-environmental risks and economic opportunities in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. ABEMA president Andréa Vulcanis said CAR analysis requires eight complex stages, and 77.3% of state managers cite a lack of technical staff as the most critical bottleneck.

Brazil's government signed decrees on Sept. 8 creating four new sustainable development reserves in the Amazon, part of efforts to offset environmental damage from the contested plan to fully pave the BR-319 highway. The reserves protect more than 668,000 hectares of rainforest under a sustainable-use model that lets existing residents stay and extract forest products. They will be managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, a federal agency under the environment ministry. The decrees also establish buffer zones around three of the four largest reserves, adding about 109,718 hectares under some level of protection, though mining could be allowed there. The BR-319 links Manaus and Porto Velho; its roughly 339-kilometer middle section is largely impassable in the rainy season. Conservationists warn full paving would increase deforestation. Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco said the government is seeking a solution that enables paving while ensuring environmental protection and sustainable economic development.

In the Peniel community, in the municipality of Roboré, Santa Cruz department, eastern Bolivia, 30-year-old Angélica Rivera has served for two years as the community's risk management delegate. Each morning she measures air humidity, temperature and the days since the last rainfall at a small weather station built by residents, then adjusts the needle on a hand-painted wooden "risk meter" at the village entrance. Its five colours—dark green, light green, yellow, orange and red—indicate wildfire risk levels. Rivera visits households to ask whether they plan to burn, what type of land they will work and in which month, producing a communal burning calendar. If the midday reading shows low or medium risk, burning is authorised with volunteer firefighters present; if risk is very high or extreme, lighting any fire is prohibited. The community covers just 320 hectares and is home to nine families, about 45 people. After fires destroyed more than 60% of local forest in 2019, this locally gathered data has guided decisions on controlled burning in the Chiquitano dry forest.

On September 15, the "Forest Carbon Sinks and Climate Solutions" session of the International Symposium on Forest Governance under Global Change was held in Beijing, with over 150 experts from China, Germany, Finland, Denmark, New Zealand, South Korea, and other countries. Liu Shirong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, proposed a "carbon sink forestry system perspective," stressing that forests' climate contribution should integrate ecosystem, product, and socio-economic systems to promote synergy among carbon sink, storage, and substitution (3S). Heinrich Spiecker of the University of Freiburg noted that carbon substitution is often overlooked. Markku Larjavaara of the University of Helsinki suggested global optimization: produce wood where trees grow fast, store carbon where biomass potential is high. Experts also discussed forest management, carbon markets, financial incentives, and public communication. Four Chinese cases were presented: Xiong'an's "Millennium Forest," "bamboo as a substitute for plastic," Yichang's forestry carbon tickets, and Longjiang Forest Industry's carbon sinks. The IUFRO "Forest and Carbon 3S" task force, with nearly 100 scientists, launched a global science initiative calling for deepened 3S research and international cooperation.

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon fell 23.5% in 2025 from the previous year, contributing to a 21% national drop in clear-cutting, the lowest level since 2016. Federal governance and control plans were key drivers, but lasting protection requires extending effective enforcement to other Brazilian biomes, the article says. History shows Brazil cut Amazon deforestation by nearly 85% between 2004 and 2012 through strict enforcement, real-time satellite monitoring and institutional coordination. That progress was later undermined: under President Jair Bolsonaro from 2019 to 2022, federal environmental inspectors fell from 1,311 to 691 and fines collapsed, with deforestation surpassing 13,000 square kilometers in 2022, a 15-year high. Since 2023, the Lula administration has combined real-time satellite monitoring with remote digital embargoes and reintroduced heavy fines, property embargoes and rural credit restrictions.

In August 2026, Arauco's panel plant in Teno, Maule region, Chile, added a line that recovers used wood and returns it to panel manufacturing. The recovered material comes mainly from pallets and packaging used by ports, logistics centres, agricultural and fruit companies, wineries, mining operations, construction firms and retailers. After separation from other waste, it is chipped and transported to Teno as recycled chips, where it re-enters the industrial process as raw material for VESTO melamine-faced MDP panels. The plant, located at kilometre 2.7 on Route J-25 in Teno, Curicó province, began operating in March 2012 and produces medium-density particleboard, including VESTO, which incorporates copper microparticles for antimicrobial surface protection. Recycled wood currently accounts for about 12% of the material used at the plant, and Arauco aims to raise that share gradually to 25%. Arauco Trading is identifying companies that generate used wood and building a supplier network able to deliver separated material under the required conditions. The line is described as having unique characteristics in Latin America.

Since 2016, China's National Forestry and Grassland Administration and partner agencies have implemented an ecological forest ranger policy that links conservation tasks with employment for people lifted out of poverty. A commentary examines the policy through the "three forestry" framework: ecological, enriching and humanistic forestry. On ecological forestry, rangers form a grassroots monitoring network; average annual forest fire spots in project counties fell to 5.7 during 2016-2024 from 15.2 in 2003-2015, with 92.5 percent of rangers listing fire patrol as their primary duty. On enriching forestry, central funding exceeded 51.4 billion yuan from 2016 to 2025, with nearly 1.1 million rangers hired annually across 22 central and western provinces, benefiting over 3 million people; the post provides about 10,000 yuan in annual income, 31.6 percent of a household's total. On humanistic forestry, 87 percent of villagers report fire, logging or pest problems to rangers. The article suggests integrating remote sensing and low-altitude patrols, expanding duties to geological and flood risk warning, and involving rangers in ecological product development and nature education.

Carrboro, North Carolina, is developing an urban forestry management program to use tree planting to reduce urban heat islands and enhance its tree canopy. The town has held the title of Tree City USA for over four decades. The plan is based on Carrboro's first comprehensive tree assessment. Chief Sustainability Officer Amy Armbruster said trees cool communities, provide wildlife habitat, slow stormwater, stabilize stream banks and improve water and air quality. The initiative stems from the Carrboro Connects Comprehensive Plan and follows a 'right tree, right place' motto. The town partnered with urban forestry consulting firm ArborPro. Its technical manager, Mason Burdick, described a '3-30-300 rule': residents should see three public trees from their door, have 30 percent canopy cover on walks, and access green space within 300 meters. Residents can provide feedback through a form. Longtime resident Claude Hooker supports planting but has concerns about costs.

Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have identified a biological weakness in drywood termites: they must molt. A 2025 study in the Journal of Economic Entomology shows that bistrifluron, an insect growth regulator that blocks formation of a new exoskeleton, killed western drywood termites with 95.7 percent mortality when termites could choose between treated and untreated wood, and about 99 percent when continuously exposed to treated wood. Nicholas Poulos, corresponding author and a doctoral student in UCR's Department of Entomology, said the chemical is more environmentally friendly than traditional treatments, is insect-specific and cannot harm humans. It works as a chitin synthesis inhibitor, disrupting the insect's ability to make enough chitin for its next exoskeleton. Drywood termites molt about seven times in their lives. The team compared bistrifluron, chlorfluazuron and noviflumuron; bistrifluron caused the fastest mortality at tested concentrations. A 0.1 percent treatment produced about 99 percent mortality after 60 days with no untreated alternative, and roughly 96 percent when termites had a choice.

A drone-based vibrating harvesting device called "Yuncai" was tested for the first time in a real hickory forest in Weiping Town, Chun'an County, Zhejiang Province. Developed by a joint team from Zhejiang A&F University and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, the device uses a DJI T40 agricultural drone equipped with a vibrating mechanism that contacts fruit-bearing branches, causing mature hickory nuts to fall. Hickory trees are mostly grown on steep, narrow hillsides where large machinery cannot enter and high branches are out of reach, creating long-standing mechanization challenges. The team had previously mastered flight control technology for drone-mounted equipment and developed bamboo transport and pruning tools. During the trial, operational parameters and fruit drop data were collected to optimize the equipment. A cooperative manager said manual harvesting is costly and dangerous, while the drone offers a safer, easier alternative. Further tests will focus on harvesting efficiency, stability and impacts on trees.
